We announce the best beaches of 2017

We reveal the country’s best beaches with announcement of Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for 2017 - 68 Blue Flags and 117 Seaside Awards - you can find the full list of winning beaches here. The results mean that more than a third of bathing beaches in England will be flying a flag that marks them out as the best in the country.

The awards are the quality marks for our beaches and mean those visiting them can be sure that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards.

A new survey carried out for Keep Britain Tidy shows that nine out of 10 people said cleanliness, safety and assured water quality were key factors in deciding which beach to visit and 93% believe that it is important to preserve and protect our beaches.

This year’s biggest winners include Cornwall Council, which achieved a fantastic 20 awards (seven Blue Flags and 13 Seaside Awards), Torbay Council which won 13 awards (three Blue Flag and ten Seaside Awards) and Thanet District Council and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council which both received ten awards (six Blue Flag and four Seaside Awards for Thanet, three Blue Flag and seven Seaside Awards for Southend).

This year, for the first time, a beach owned by a bar has received a Blue Flag. Ingoldmells South Beach, near Skegness, is managed by the Bibby brothers. Elliot and Bradley Bibby said: “At Bibby’s Beach Bar we know our customers want to relax on a clean, safe beach. That’s why we are so delighted to have the Blue Flag so all our visitors know they are coming to one of the world’s best beaches.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: “It is great news for holiday-makers, overseas visitors and businesses that rely on coastal tourism that we have been able to award so many flags this year.

“The success of our beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers to local people and businesses.

“When you enjoy a day on the beach flying a Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.

Sharp’s Brewery, based in North Cornwall, are the national sponsor of the Blue Flag in England, as well as supporting beaches across Cornwall to achieve their Blue Flag.
