When contacting your local news desk it is important that you have drafted a news release providing information about your event.

If you don’t have a media team who are able to help promote your event, you might want to use this sample press release to get you started.

Try to keep your release to two pages or less and always allow extra spacing between the lines (this is a common layout of news release).

“Keep it clean!” urge [INSERT NAME OF ORGANISATION]

For immediate release

Volunteers from [NAME OF ORGANISATION] in [NAME OF AREA] are joining the country’s biggest ever litter pick in a bid to rid our town of rubbish.

They are tired of the tide of litter that is bringing down the reputation the area and have joined the Big Tidy Up campaign, run by Keep Britain Tidy, in an effort to rid the streets of [NAME OF AREA] of litter for good.

To prove how much they loathe litter, staff at [NAME OF ORGANISATION] are going out onto the streets on [DATE] to clear the area of rubbish.

Chief Executive for [NAME OF ORGANISATION] said: “Staff at [NAME OF ORGANISATION] take great pride in working in [NAME OF AREA] but they’re fed up with the amount of litter on the streets. This clean up will show others that we care about the future of our local environment and that we are not prepared to live, work and play in an area that is blighted by rubbish.”

He/She added: “Taking part in the Big Tidy Up and helping to improve the state of the area is a great opportunity for us to get out into the community and show others that we care about the area.”

Figures released by the UK's biggest anti-litter campaign, Keep Britain Tidy, have revealed:

·                     Council taxpayers in the UK fork out £500m a year to clean the streets.

·                     Over 30m tonnes of litter are collected from our streets each year

·                     The UK rat population now stands at approximately 60 million thanks to the growing presence of dropped food.

·                     People can be fined £80 for dropping litter. Last year 44,000 people were prosecuted .

Like everywhere else in the UK, [NAME OF AREA] has its fair share of litter problems. But thanks to the [NAME OF ORGANISATION] they at least have people prepared to do something about it.

[INSERT NAME OF ORGANISATION] will begin to tackle rubbish at [LOCATION] on [TIME AND DATE]. They are hoping that the rest of the community gets the message that dropping litter is 'simply not on'
