Green Clubs in Cornwall
The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers’ (BTCV) Green Clubs in Cornwall help adults with learning disabilities to undertake practical work experience.
The Big Tidy Up has provided an ideal outlet for the scheme and members of Green Clubs in Redruth, Falmouth and Tuckingmill have completed ten [12 if published after March] tidy ups since the campaign’s launch in September 2008.
Sites cleaned have included local parks, housing estates and beaches, and volunteers have so far recovered a huge amount of rubbish, as well as items that can be recycled.
To add an educational aspect to the tidy ups, volunteers had fun trying to guess where some of the items recovered had come from – such as water sachets washed up on a beach believed to be from a ship’s emergency supplies.
Through the scheme, the Green Clubs have established an excellent relationship with the neighbourhood office at Pengegon housing estate, leading to a monthly programme of litter picks.
Jadie Baker, Green Club Co-ordinator, said: “What is good about working together like this, is it creates a sense of community and for some of our younger volunteers it is their first taste of active citizenship.”
