Council Cleans Up!

An award-winning council has been leading the way to tidy up the local area, just months after receiving a prestigious Big Tidy Up award for their efforts!

Sandwell Council won the Big Tidy Up Award for the Best Supporting Authority in 2009 and since then has tackled more than just litter to get the local area looking clean and tidy!

In association with local environmental chairty Tipton Litter Watch, litter picking volunteers have so far helped to clear a tonnes of rubbish dumped in the local area.

The much-praised campaign team has now widened its aims and has been taking on planting, landscaping and now graffiti removal projects.

Graffiti removal company Nordic Pioneer heard about Sandwell’s enthusiastic clean up effort and the dedication of the local people and the council working together and has decided to sponsor graffiti removal equipment for the campaign.

Nordic Pioneer client liaison manager Steven Hedges and company director David Smith paid Sandwell a visit to donate a further four graffiti cleaning kits to the campaign.

Mr Hedges said: "We were really impressed when we heard that so many people were taking part in the campaign and we wanted to show our support in some way."

Rebecca Joinson, spokesperson for Keep Britain Tidy, “It’s fantastic to see how the Big Tidy Up has led on to such great work in Sandwell to keep the area looking clean, tidy and appealing to those people who live, work and play in the area.

“We hope that other councils will follow Sandwell and Tipton Litter Watch’s excellent example and join the Big Tidy Up campaign to help bring about improvements to the local area.”

The council’s campaign will run for a further eight weeks until mid June. If you live in the area and would like to get involved please call 0121 569 3734 or visit www.sandwell.gov.uk/bigspringclean
