Competition Winners Announced!
Big Tidy Up volunteers right across the country have been sending in their photos to show us why they love where they live.
The competition, run by Keep Britain Tidy and recycling organisation Alupro, attracted many entries with volunteers sending pictures of their local landscape and wildlife, and people taking positive action on where they live.
After much deliberation, the judges decided that Kim Eccles, of Sacred Hearts Church of England Primary School in Batley, was the winning picture!
The winning picture shows two you Eco-Councillors at the school caring for their local environment. The judges liked the movement and informality of the photograph, awarding the school the top prize of £200!
The runners up who came closely behind were from Radstock Primary School. They send in an excellent portfolio of pictures of the natural world and have been awarded £100 for their efforts.
Two other entries were highly commended by the judges. Tanya Roberts receives a commendation for her picture of the Thatto Heath Big Tidy Up and Barbara Webster of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council also receives a commendation from the judges for a picture of the Redcar Beach Blitz.
Rebecca Joinson, spokesperson for Keep Britain Tidy, said: “The competition has shown just how important the local environment is to people and what can be achieved by making a little effort to take care of the area where you live.
“It’s also great to see people taking action to look after their local environment by taking part in the Big Tidy Up and recycling aluminium.”
Alupro executive director Rick Hindley added: “We would like people to see recycling aluminium as a ‘must do’ action to save energy and encourage them not to drop litter” says “and we hope that building an association between recycling and looking after our own local environment will make both competition entrants, and visitors to the exhibition, more aware of the issues.”
The winning picture was shown at an exhibition of 65 pictures chosen from 5,000 entries to Alupro’s Love where you Live photo competition at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in April.
The exhibition aimed to encourage people to look with fresh eyes at their local environment, and what can be done to look after it, with entry categories from across the UK.
